Ingredients in Bayer Advanced Moss Killer

Bayer Advanced line, including its 2-in-1 Moss and Algae Killer, focuses on bringing the Bayer Corp.'s commercial lawn and garden formulas to the residential arena. According to the company, the moss killer treats moss, algae, lichen and liverworts, killing these pesky rootless plants within hours. For curious gardeners, the product lists its ingredients right on the front of the label.
  1. Active Ingredients

    • The product label of Bayer Advanced 2-In-1 Moss and Algae Killer lists only one active ingredient: potassium soap of fatty acids. This “soap,” commonly known as fatty acid salts, combines potassium with fatty acids derived from plants such as castor, coconut, cottonseed, olive and palm. According to Bayer, potassium soap of fatty acids makes up 22.11 percent of 2-In-1 Moss and Algae Killer's total content. Due to its potassium-based composition, this spray is considered a natural, low-hazard yard care product.

    Inert Ingredients

    • Inert, or inactive, ingredients make up the rest of Bayer Advanced 2-In-1 Moss and Algae Killer; these ingredients account for 77.89 percent of the product's total chemical composition. While Bayer does not list the specific inert ingredients of this spray, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that inert ingredients often include solvents that help herbicides penetrate plants, as well as anti-caking and anti-foaming agents or substances that extend a product's shelf life.

    Usage

    • Bayer recommends its 2-In-1 Moss and Algae killer for use on lawns, buildings, patios and roofs, including asphalt, brick, concrete, pavement, stone, stucco and wood surfaces. Bayer says that the product is safe for lawns, ornamental gardens, greenhouses and exteriors. As one of the company's “ready-to-spray” products, you apply this herbicide by attaching its nozzle to your garden hose and thoroughly spraying the treatment area. Read the product's label, instructions and warnings thoroughly before use.

    Warnings

    • Despite its naturally derived contents, using Bayer Advanced 2-In-1 Moss and Algae Killer requires some caution. Always wear eye protection, long sleeves, long pants and gloves to avoid skin and eye contact with this product, as it may cause temporary eye injury or skin irritation. In case of contact, rinse your eyes or body with water for 15 to 20 minutes and contact your local poison control center if irritation persists. Apply this moss killer during dry weather to prevent runoff from entering your city's drainage system.
