Will Weed B Gon Kill Speedwell Lawn Weeds?

Speedwell (Veronica spp) is a low-growing, flowering plant often used as an ornamental groundcover. The plant produces attractive, small spikes of flowers in white, pink, violet or blue. Speedwells may be annuals or perennials; and, depending on species, grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. While many speedwell species are attractive additions to the garden, the plant may escape into the lawn, spreading via rhizomes or stolons. When speedwell invades the lawn or spreads too far, it can be controlled with herbicides such as Scott's Ortho Weed B Gon.
  1. Active Ingredient

    • Weed B Gon is primarily formulated with 2,4-D herbicide mixed with a smaller percentage of Quinclorac and dicamba. All three are systemic herbicides that act on broadleaf weeds such as speedwells without harming most species of turfgrass. They are considered low-toxicity herbicides that pose minimal danger to humans, bees or aquatic life. Applied to the foliage, the mixture of 2,4-D, dicamba and Quinclorac is absorbed into the speedwell's circulatory system, killing the plant from within. Weed B Gon is a mixture of 6.24 percent 2,4-D, 2.13 percent Quinclorac and 0.60 percent dicamba. The product comes in ready-to-use form.

    When to Spray

    • Weed B Gon works best on young, actively growing speedwell plants. It should be applied in spring, before regular daytime temperatures rise above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Spraying on windless days prevents accidentally overspraying desirable plants nearby. The spray can be used on new lawns about six weeks after the seed sprouts, and after the grass is mowed three times. If the lawn is sprigged or plugged, Weed B Gon may be used three to four weeks after installation.

    How to Spray

    • Shake the container to be sure the herbicide is well mixed, then attach the container to the garden hose nozzle and turn on the water supply. Bend the tab holding the dial in place, and turn the dial clockwise to begin spraying. Apply an even coating of herbicide to the lawn, beginning at the farthest edge and working your way backward. Once the lawn is thoroughly sprayed, turn the dial counterclockwise to halt the spray. Store the container with any unused herbicide in a safe place inaccessible to children or pets. Keep children and pets out of the yard until the grass dries completely.

    Seeding or Mowing Treated Areas

    • If you plan to seed the treated area, wait at least four weeks after spraying Weed B Gon to allow the herbicide to dissipate in the soil.
It is best to wait at least two days after spraying the lawn before mowing the grass. Clippings from mowing soon after spraying with Weed B Gon should not be mulched or composted.

    Caution

    • Weed B Gon is not appropriate for spraying speedwells that appear in vegetable or flower gardens, or near woody ornamentals. The herbicide should never be allowed to touch the roots of desirable plants or trees.
