How to Hook Up a Tractor to a Wagon

Hooking up a tractor to a wagon may at first seem too laborious of a task, especially if you're not very familiar with farm equipment. With modern equipment, however, hooking up a tractor need not be a struggle. A one-person hitch is recommended by the University of Wisconsin for efficiency, cost effectiveness and safety. After following a few simple steps, the wagon will be hooked up to the tractor in minutes.

Purchase a one-person hitch. It is much safer than trying to hook up a wagon to a tractor with pins alone. It minimizes risk of injury and does not require a helper to assist you with the placement of the pins. A one-person hitch is designed so one individual can easily use it.

    • 2

Align the V-guide of the hitch with the lift-rod on the unit of the wagon. After it has been properly aligned, put the tractor in reverse and back up into the unit.

    • 3

Back up the tractor until you hear the hitch latch onto the wagon. As long as the V-guide and lift-rod are properly aligned, a one-person hitch will latch into place automatically. If it does not latch, realign the components until they are completely even with each other.

Pull on the steel cable connected to the coupler to unhitch the wagon from the tractor. Alternatively, if you do not want to unhitch the tractor, weld the tongue unit of the hitch directly to the wagon.
