How to Change the Spark Plugs on a Toro 2-cycle Snow Thrower

Toro manufactures a complete line of two-cycle and four-cycle snow throwers. Most of their snow throwers use Briggs and Stratton engines. Regular maintenance and tune-ups keep the Toro snow thrower operating efficiently throughout the season. Part of a tune-up is changing the spark plug. Changing the spark plug on a Toro two-cycle snow thrower is the same as changing a spark plug on a lawnmower. Because of the different models, it is a good idea to take the old plug to the store to purchase the correct replacement plug. The spark plug size and manufacturer is written on the top insulator.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the spark plug wire boot off the top of the spark plug. The spark plug is normally on the top of the engine on Toro two-cycle snow throwers.

    • 2

Clean the area around the base of the plug with a rag. This helps prevent dirt and debris from getting inside the combustion chamber when removing the spark plug.

    • 3

Place a spark plug socket on a socket wrench, and turn the spark plug counterclockwise with the socket wrench. Spark plug sockets have a foam or soft-rubber gasket inside that protects the top of the spark plug from cracking when it is removed or installed.

    • 4

Push a clean rag into the top of the spark plug hole. Take the spark plug to an auto-parts store or home-improvement center for a replacement. Most two-cycle Toro snow throwers use a Champion RCJ8Y spark plug. Look for a plug that is the same as the old one, or an equivalent.

Set the gap on the new spark plug to .030 with a gap disc tool. Pull the rag out of the spark plug hole, and thread the new spark plug into the engine until it is hand tight. Turn the plug another half-turn with the socket wrench, and push the spark plug wire boot over the top of the plug.
