How to Take the Spark Plug Boot Off of an Echo Chainsaw

The spark plug wire boot sometimes becomes loose due to the spring connector inside the boot. The spring connector also tears into the boot resulting in damage to the boot. The spark plug wire on your Echo chainsaw is part of the coil assembly. It is not necessary to remove the coil assembly or spark plug wire when replacing the spark plug boot. Most boots simply twist on and off the spring connecting to the end of the wire. Taking the spark plug boot off an Echo chainsaw will require some force.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Echo chainsaw on a flat surface. Twist the spark plug wire boot left to right as you pull it off the spark plug with your fingers.

    • 2

Wrap duct tape around the spark plug wire behind the boot. The duct tape helps protect the wire insulation from damage while removing the spark plug boot.

    • 3

Lock a pair of vise grips around the spark plug wire on the duct tape behind the boot. Grasp the boot with a pair of pliers.

    • 4

Hold the vise grips against the back of the Echo chainsaw, while twisting and pulling the spark plug boot with the pliers. The boot will twist off the spring on the end of the spark plug wire.

    • 5

Squeeze the spring end with the pliers, once you remove the boot. Squeeze just enough to loosen the end of the spring wire from the spark plug wire, and then pull the spring away from the spark plug wire.
