How to Take the Bar Off a Chain Saw

The bar on your chain saw guides the chain during operation. Over time the bar becomes bent or requires some oiling to keep the chain operating smoothly. When it is time for repairs or maintenance to the bar, it is necessary to take the bar off the chain saw. Regardless of the make or model of your chain saw, the bar removal process is generally the same. Replacement bars are available at home improvement centers and hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the chain saw on a flat surface, preferably a work bench. Unplug the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Put on a pair of heavy leather work gloves to protect your hands from the chain while removing the bar.

    • 2

Loosen and remove the two guide bar cover nuts on the right side of the chain saw with the tool that comes with the chainsaw, or use a wrench. Pull the cover away from the chain saw.

    • 3

Grasp the bar on both sides with your fingers and push it toward the chain saw body. Unhook the chain from the sprocket in the chain saw, then pull the chain and bar out of the unit.

    • 4

Pull the chain away from the bar, and lay the chain flat on the work surface. The bar is now ready for repair or replacement.
