How to Build a Snow Plow Frame

Snow plows can be attached to lawnmowers, snow mobiles, cars, trucks and ATVs. They can clear driveways and sidewalks, and can create pathways to barns and livestock. Snow plows don't need to be complicated and don't have to be commercially purchased. They can be made from junk materials found on your property and flat punched bolts. Once the frame is built, a single sheet of stainless steel can be bolted to the frame for plowing, or several different sizes and curves can be created and rebolted to the frame for different purposes.

Things You'll Need

  • Blowtorch
  • Welder
  • 5 crown bolts -- 1 3/8 inch by 48 inch, punched steel zinc 1/8-inch thick flat bars

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 55-gallon metal drum vertically into quarters using a blowtorch. Set aside two quarters. Weld around the outside to blunt any sharp edges and prevent cutting hazards. Bolt a 48-inch crown bolt lengthwise along one edge of each of the two quarters -- along the outside curve, toward the center of the drum quarter. These crown bolts will serve as the anchors for the snow plow, when it's assembled.

Cut one 48-inch crown bolt into four equal parts, forming four cross braces. Bolt two cross braces perpendicular to the longer edge of the drum quarter. Place the remaining two cross braces at the outer end of the longer edges. Cover with an additional 48-inch crown bolt. Bolt the 48-inch bolt through the drum quarter and the cross brace. Nut in place tightly. Repeat this process with the second drum quarter's top horizontal (longer) edge.

Add another 48-inch punched bolt near the center of the cross braces. Bolt securely. On the far-left cross brace, fasten a U-bracket with bolts and nuts. Move to the next cross brace, and add another U-bracket facing the opposite direction as the first bracket. The third cross brace U-bracket should face the same direction as the first. The fourth will match the second bracket's direction. These bolts will be used to bolt the frame to your vehicle. Turning them opposite directions adds stability and strength.
