Remove any plastic shrouds or metal shields or components that block your access to the spark plug. You'll usually need a Phillips-head screwdriver or a small socket. The plug will have a rubber boot over it.
Grasp the rubber boot firmly between your finger and thumb. Twist and pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug. The twisting motion helps break the seal between the spark plug wire boot and the top of the plug.
Blow compressed air around the spark plug to remove dirt, dust and debris. This helps prevent any foreign matter from dropping inside the crankcase when you remove the spark plug.
Attach a spark plug socket to a socket wrench. Spark plug sockets have a rubber cushion inside that prevents damage to the spark plug.
Turn the spark plug counterclockwise with the socket wrench until the plug is free from the engine. Stuff a small rag into the hole until you are ready to install the new spark plug.
