How to Change the Spool on a Black & Decker Grass Hog

Change the spool next time the Black & Decker Grass Hog trimmer requires a line change. Black & Decker offers a replacement pre-wound line spool for the Grass Hog trimmer. The pre-wound spool saves time and frustration, eliminating the need to reline an empty spool. Changing the spool on a Black & Decker Grass Hog requires dismantling the trimmer head as you would when replacing the line on the old spool. Replacement spools are available at Black & Decker dealers as well as some home improvement centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Black & Decker Grass Hog from the power cord. Place the trimmer on a flat surface with the spool pointing toward you.

    • 2

Press the two tabs on the outer hub inward with your fingers. The outer hub is the portion covering the bottom of the spool housing. Lift the outer hub away from the housing.

    • 3

Pull the spool out of the housing with your fingers. Remove any debris and remaining line from inside the housing with a rag.

    • 4

Place the new pre-wound spool over the housing, aligning the ends of each line with the eyelets on the sides of the housing.

    • 5

Insert the ends of the line through the eyelets, and lower the spool into the housing. Grab each line end with your hands, and pull them away from the housing. This releases the line from the holding slots on the spool.

    • 6

Push the spool fully into the housing, rotating the spool until it drops into place. Once the spool drops in place, push it down to snap it into the housing. The spool will rotate left to right a few degrees when correctly installed in the housing. Press the outer hub over the housing until the tabs lock into position.
