How to Repair a Clogged Fuel Line on a Stihl Chain Saw

Stihl chain saws are two-cycle, gas-powered saws used for cutting down trees or removing dangling branches. The parts of a chain saw can become extremely dirty from sawdust that gets mixed with oil from the saw's bar oiler. This debris is usually confined to the exterior of the saw, but when proper care is neglected, small pieces can get into the fuel tank and lines during refilling. Clogged fuel lines can cause the chainsaw to sputter or quit running, requiring that they be cleared out.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the Stihl's spark plug wire with a pair of pliers.

    • 2

Push in on and lift the carburetor box off the chain saw.

    • 3

Press in on the tabs at the bottom of the air filter housing, and then pull the filter and housing out to access the carburetor.

    • 4

Pry the primer bulb off with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the fuel lines attached to it with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 5

Remove the fuel lines from the carburetor ports with the needle-nose pliers.

    • 6

Insert the small plastic straw attachment to the push nozzle on the can of spray carburetor cleaner. Spray the cleaner into each fuel line until dirt and debris are cleared out completely.

    • 7

Attach the fuel lines to the carburetor and to the primer bulb with the needle-nose pliers.

    • 8

Snap the chain saw's primer bulb back into place.

    • 9

Replace the air filter and the carburetor cover.

    • 10

Place the spark plug wire back on the plug and start the chain saw to test it.
