Check that the string trimmer has adequate trimmer line, fuel and that the spark plug is in good working order. It is easier to attend to these items before starting rather than when halfway through the process.
Put on all protective gear. This includes long pants, shoes that cover the entire foot, ear and eye protection. String trimmers produce a lot of flying debris that can easily end up in the user's eye.
Ensure that the work area is clear of people. Do not operate string trimmers within a range where bystanders can be injured.
Place protective barriers around trees and shrubs. Using a string trimmer too close to the base of plants will harm them and potentially kill them. A trunk guard or other protective barrier will help to minimize damage from an errant string trimmer.
Hold the trimmer properly. It should be held at a slight downward angle near ground level, but not at it. Holding it too low while operating will scalp the grass.
Cut grass and weeds furthest away from buildings and desirable plants. This allows you to adjust to the weight and action of the string trimmer before using it in areas where a steadier hand is required to avoid damage.
Edge sidewalks, driveways and around trees and beds carefully. Approach borders from the sidewalk or driveway side to minimize the chance of cutting lawn areas not intended to be cut. When carrying the trimmer between sites, turn off or keep it raised high enough above ground level to avoid cutting flowers and grass, and low enough to avoid personal injury.
