How to Make Fuel Return Lines

Fuel return lines are small lines used in small engines that run from the ports of the carburetor to either the fuel tank or the primer bulb. Over time, fuel return lines can dry out and crack or break. It's not difficult for experienced home mechanics to make their own fuel return lines, partly because these lines are made of the same material as aquarium tubing and hoses. Hard rubber 7/16-inch diameter tubing is the standard carburetor port size for most small engine carburetors. It can be fitted to work as a fuel return line.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from the carburetor port to the primer bulb of the fuel tank. This will help you determine the length of the fuel return line.

    • 2

Measure out that much of the 7/16-inch plastic tubing and cut the length with scissors.

    • 3

Insert one end of the tubing onto the carburetor port and the other end either to the primer bulb or the fuel tank.
