How to Install a Craftsman 5 HP Snow Blower Carburetor Kit

In addition to push and riding lawn mowers, Craftsman also manufactures other gas-powered outdoor tools like trimmers, edgers and snow blowers. The five-horsepower Craftsman snow blower is a four-cycle gas engine that uses a primer bulb to prime the carburetor before starting. Through prolonged use, the carburetor jets on the Craftsman snow blower can be clogged, but there are kits available that are used to clean the carburetor and replace parts if needed.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pull off the Craftsman snowblower's spark plug wire.

    • 2

Unscrew the air filter cover lid with a screwdriver. Remove the filter and then unscrew the screws at the base that hold the assembly in place so you can access the carburetor.

    • 3

Pull the carburetor fuel lines off carefully with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Spray out each line with a shot of spray carburetor cleaner.

    • 4

Disconnect the throttle linkage from the carburetor control arm.

    • 5

Remove the screws holding the carburetor in place with a Torx head screwdriver.

    • 6

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw holding the primer bulb assembly to the carb.

    • 7

Pull the metering diaphragm assembly off the rest of the carburetor. Lift the old metering diaphragm gasket off the piece to access the needle and metering lever. Remove the old needle and metering lever and replace it with new ones from the carburetor kit.

    • 8

Place a new metering diaphram gasket from the kit onto the assembly and set it aside.

    • 9

Grab the other section of the carburetor and remove the jets with a screwdriver. Spray the jets down with carburetor cleaner, allow them to dry and then re-insert them.

    • 10

Rejoin the two halves of the carburetor and then attach the primer bulb assembly with the screwdriver.

    • 11

Attach the carburetor back to the engine with the Torx head screwdriver.

    • 12

Fit the fuel lines onto the carburetor ports and the throttle linkage back onto the control arm with the pliers.

    • 13

Replace the air filter and filter assembly and the spark plug wire.
