How to Time an Onan Engine

When power is knocked out for prolonged periods of time, whether it is in the heat of summer or the cold of winter, an emergency backup generator is an invaluable piece of equipment to have. The Cummins Onan is a brand of emergency generator that runs on a gas-powered engine. If the timing on the generator runs too high or low, there is a limiting screw that can be adjusted to set the idle speed.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the limiting screw on the engine of the generator. It is next to the air filter cover on the right lower side.

    • 2

Insert the Phillips screwdriver into the limiting screw and turn it fully to the right.

    • 3

Turn the limiting screw one full turn to the left and then start the generator's engine. Let the generator warm up for about three minutes.

    • 4

Turn the limiting screw one-eighth turn to the right if the idle is running too low or it sounds like the generator's engine is going to stall out. Turn the screw to the left one-eighth turn if it is running too low. Continue to adjust in one-eighth-turn increments until the motor is running smooth and evenly.
