How to Make a Lawnmower Environmentally Friendly

Old lawnmowers are notorious for noise, smoke and poor cutting. You can change all that by making your mower more environmentally-friendly. Landscapers or homeowners who expect their mowers to perform optimally typically have a routine maintenance schedule to keep their mowers in good condition and running for years. These mowers take little effort to run and are more efficient in gas and oil consumption than a non-serviced mower. You may choose to have a small engine mechanic perform some of these items.

Give your lawnmower a tune-up. Drain out the old oil from your lawnmower at least once a year and install a new oil filter. This simple step will keep the engine clean. Change out or wash the air filter for optimal air intake. Change or clean the spark plug for a clean and easy start. Adjust the carburetor and idle to run smoothly without any smoking.

Sharpen the lawnmower blades with a file or grindstone. This will make the grass-cutting process easier so the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to cut the grass and therefore uses less gasoline and oil.

    • 3

Lift the wheels to a setting that cuts the lawn at 3 or 4 inches instead of 2 inches. The extra height is less stressful to the grass and protects it from the drying effects of the hot sun. Mowing the lawn less is better for the environment than cutting the grass blades close to the ground as the clippings conserve more moisture in the soil.

    • 4

Take off the grass collection bag and allow the mower to blow the cut grass over the lawn. The grass decomposes and adds nutrients back into the soil.
