How to Make Hedge Clippers Into Grass Cutters

Hedge clippers have the power to cut through thick-stemmed ornamental grasses yet can also handle lawn grass. While not as efficient as a lawnmower, a manual or electric hedge clipper works well for small patches of grass. The clippers can likewise stand in for grass shears when you need to trim just a few strands of errant grass. Cut grass when it's dry since wet grass can clump together.

Instructions

  1. Using Manual Hedge Clippers

    • 1

Squat down beside the grass that needs to be trimmed. Grasp the hedge clippers with both hands.

    • 2

Open both blades by pulling your hands away from each other.

    • 3

Position both blades inside the area of grass that needs to be trimmed so that when you close the blades, they will cut the grass at the desired height. Move your hands up or down, when necessary, to adjust for height.

    • 4

Repeat until you've cut all of the grass that needs trimming.

    Using Power Hedge Trimmers

    • 5

Put on safety goggles or sunglasses to prevent clippings from going into your eyes. If the hedge trimmers have a cord, plug it into an outlet.

    • 6

Stand by the grass that needs to be cut, holding the hedge clippers so that the device's cord is behind you and the blade is in front of you. With cordless clippers, keep the blade in front of you.

    • 7

      Turn the clippers on.

    • 8

Pass the clipper back and forth over the grass to trim it. Position the clipper at the desired height to cut the grass. Work this way over the entire area that needs to be trimmed.
