Weed Eater Replacement Spool Problems

A Weed Eater spool replacement starts with the correct replacement product, based on the company's recommendations and the model type. Understanding how to replace the line is another key in preventing line issues. Some of the common line problems, including breakage, occur when a spool is improperly replaced.
  1. Proper Replacement

    • Weed Eater recommends using its branded spools and bulk line to avoid problems. The line type varies by the model, but the typical line is a non-metallic monofilament line. The company also recommends a specific diameter line that varies with each model. Weed Eater says using other lines is likely to result in more breakage or improper line feeding. Never use materials such as wire, rope or string as a replacement for the line in the spool.

    Replacing Line

    • Replace the line whenever the corners of the lugs show wear, such as rounded corners instead of square, a reduction in size or if the corners are broken off. To replace the entire spool, unlock the trimmer head to remove the spool. Replace the spool and lock it into place. If replacing the line on an existing spool, wind the line around the spool tightly and evenly.

    Line Issues

    • The line is most likely to break, pull back into the head or not advance when the spool is not properly installed. Rewinding the line on the spool can fix the issue. Pull out about 4 inches of line to the outside of the trimmer head after rewinding the line or when installing a new spool. Verify you are using the correct diameter sized spool as specified by Weed Eater.

    Other Tips

    • Pre-wound spools offer not only convenience, but usually perform better. Clean the dirt or other residue from the head when replacing the spool. Inspect it for any damage, and repair it, if necessary. Use the Weed Eater only with the shield attached to protect the spool and any other parts contained in the head. Do not use the trimmer until the head is correctly installed and secured.
