How to Remove a Pulley From a Cub Tractor

For more than 50 years, Cub Cadet has manufactured tractors and other lawn equipment for residential and commercial use. These tractors use pulleys in a number of different places, such as to power various components in the engine compartment. If you ever need to remove a pulley from a Cub tractor, the difficulty level usually corresponds to the age of the tractor. In older Cub tractors, the pulley bolts may have rusted in place, making them harder to remove.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Cub tractor in a flat area that allows you room to work around the body of the tractor. Set the parking brake. Place a wood block behind the tractor's rear wheel.

    • 2

Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition.

    • 3

Locate the battery for your Cub Tractor. This location will depend on the age of your Cub. In newer tractors, for example, access the battery by loosening the cowling around the dashboard with a screwdriver or turning the wingnuts with pliers and then removing. In some older Cubs, the battery is located in the engine compartment beneath the hood.

    • 4

Loosen the nuts on the black battery cable with a small wrench. Pull the black cable off the battery.

    • 5

Locate the pulley that you want to remove on the Cub tractor. Look for the adjusting nut near the pulley that allows you to introduce slack into the attached belt. Loosen the nut and press on the pulley to slacken any attached belts. Pull the belt out of position.

    • 6

Tighten the adjusting nut to secure the pulley. Loosen the nut on the center of the pulley by turning it counterclockwise. Use a torque wrench if a socket wrench doesn't provide enough power.

    • 7

Pull the pulley nut out of place. Remove the pulley form the Cub tractor.
