Information on Ryobi Trimmer & Brush Cutter Heads

Ryobi Power Tools produces a varied line of gardening and other tools, including garden trimmers with 2-cycle or 4-cycle engines. The trimmers, which may be powered by either gas or lithium-ion batteries, may be hand-held or wheeled. The company also offers the Ryobi Expand-It brush cutter attachment for its own trimmers that fits other brands of trimmers.
  1. Gas-Powered Trimmers

    • The 4-cycle wheeled trimmer eliminates the strain of carrying a handheld trimmer while working on large or heavily overgrown areas. This model does not require a gasoline-oil mix and can be fueled straight from your gas can. The string head has a 16-inch cutting area. Handheld trimmers come in 2- and 4-cycle versions, with either straight or curved shafts. Like the wheeled version, the handheld 4-cycle trimmers take plain gasoline fuel. The trimmers have 17- or 18-inch cutting areas. Straight or curved models are available, and the trimmers can take brush cutter attachments.

    Cordless Trimmers

    • Ryobi’s cordless trimmers feature an 18- or 24-volt battery, called One+. The 18V model has a 12-inch cutting swath and a rotating handle. Simply flip the tool over to use it as an edger. The 18-inch cordless hedge trimmer model also functions as a trimmer and edger. The company’s One+ lithium-ion batteries can replace the less environmentally friendly nickel-cadmium batteries in older One+ Ryobi tools. The 18-inch, 24-volt hedge trimmer has a string trimmer and edger kit included. Both models feature auto-feed heads that eliminate the need to “bump” the head to feed out the string. Some models come with variable speed triggers.

    String Trimmer/Brush Cutter Combination

    • With its .8-horsepower, 26cc engine and Ryobi’s trademarked ZipStart Plus system, the combination string trimmer with brush cutter is easy to start and use. This handheld model has a straight shaft, shoulder harness and padded handle. The unit comes with the company’s Expand-It attachment system, though the attachments are not included. Expand-It attachments turn this model into a pruner, edger, blower, tiller, hedge trimmer or straight trimmer.

    Brush Cutter Attachment

    • The brush cutter attachment is part of the Expand-It line of tools. The attachment has a straight shaft for longer reach, and the 8-inch Tri-Arc blades make quick work of thicker weeds. Although the brush cutter can cut down pulpy stalks, do not use it on stalks thicker than 1/2 inch in diameter. The attachment also fits other brands of trimmers, including Toro, Weed Eater and Troy Bilt. Brush cutter attachments fit easily to the Ryobi trimmer without tools. It weighs four pounds and comes with a three-year warranty.
