Options for Snapper Mulching Blades

Mulching mowers allow you to leave clippings in place on your lawn to decay and return nutrients to the turf. These mowers use high lift blades and expanded cutting edges to mulch grass as they cut. The cut grass pieces fall down into the lawn rather than sit on top of it. “Proper mowing practices are essential if a high quality lawn is to develop," according to the Ohio State University Extension. Snapper recommends you cut only one-third of the grass height, use a fast blade speed combined with slow movement, and work when the grass is dry to produce the best mulching effect from your blades.
  1. Ninja Blades

    • Snapper’s mulching blade is the Ninja, available on the company’s Ninja mowers and featuring dual Y-shaped ends. The blades offer nine cutting height options from 1.25 up to 4 inches high and six cutting surfaces to slice blades of grass into a fine mulch. The deck is specially designed to permit the blade to cut the grass multiple times, and the mower and blade combination is designed to blow the finely chopped clippings back onto your lawn.

    Snapper Mulching Mowers

    • Ninja series models have mulching and side discharge options or 3-N-1 mulch, bag and side discharge options. Ninja series models have a standard deck and use Ninja mulching blades. HI VAC series models come with either an optional Ninja Mulcher Kit or a 3-N-1 Ninja Kit included. These mowers have HI VAC decks and bagging high lift blades designed to help create a vacuum-like suction to draw away cut grass for either bagging or dispersing.

    Blade Care

    • Before each use, check the mulching blade for excessive wear and clean the mower’s deck. A notched end indicates that a blade change is required. Poorly cut grass signals the need to sharpen or change your mower’s blade. Damaged, bent and loose blades lead to vibration in the mower. An improper blade may cause poor discharge and grass clogs on the underside of the mower. Good blade condition means good grass condition -- no browning or fraying of the tips of grass blades. Adjust the rear wheels to a setting one notch lower than the front wheels to mulch-cut thicker grass, recommends the Snapper Operator’s Manual.

    Maintenance

    • Remove the blade. Use a grinding wheel to sharpen the original cutting edge to an angle of 22 to 28 degrees. Sharpen only the original cutting edge. Grind the heavy end of the blade if you need to adjust the blade’s balance. Snapper's recommended setting for the blade cap screw is 40 foot pounds of torque. Snapper’s mulching mowers use the standard life cutter blade number 7026691YP and the Ninja-Quad cutter blade number 7026407AYP. Snapper warns that improper use or abuse of your machine may void your warranty.
