How to Convert a Snow Plow From a Pickup to a Skid Steer

Snow plows that mount to the front of pickups are extremely handy in areas that get hard snow accumulation, which a push snow thrower may have problems handling. But if the pickup won't be unavailable, the plow can be connected to the front of a skid steer. The main task in converting a plow is removing the mounting bracket from the pickup's front bumper and remounting it to the front of the skid steer.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Drill
  • Steel drill bits

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bolts mounting the receiver assembly to the front of the pickup with an adjustable wrench and a socket set. Hold the nut in place with the adjustable wrench while removing the bolt with the socket.

    • 2

Slide the bolts out of the receiver assembly and lift it from the truck.

    • 3

Hold the receiver assembly up the the bottom front of the skid steer, where it will be mounted, and mark the area where the mounting holes line up on the skid steer.

    • 4

Drill out the assembly receiver mounting holes on the skid steer, using a steel drill bit that matches the size of the snow plow's receiver assembly.

    • 5

Hold the receiver mount in place, slip the mounting bolts through the mount and the skid steer. Fasten the nuts to the end of the mounting bolts and tighten them firmly with the adjustable wrench and socket set.

    • 6

Retract the connecting pins by hand on the attachment arm assembly and pull the skid steer slowly so its attachment arms are lined up to the plow.

    • 7

Slide the attachment arm forward so that it slides into the receiver assembly mounted on the skid steer. Slide the locking pins down and into place.

    • 8

Hook up the electronics from the plow to the skid steer. Electrical connections vary by plow model. However, many connect through a plastic wiring harness or connectors that are bolted down to the battery terminals on the skid steer. If this is the case, remove the skid steer battery cables with the wrench, slide the plow's electrical contacts to their respective positive and negative battery terminals and then replace and tighten the battery cables.
