How to Mount Chains on a Snowblower

To remove large amounts of snow from your yard or driveway, you'll need to use heavy-duty snow removal tools, such as a self-propelled blower. A self-propelled snow blower features a drive system that rotates the the machine's tires in a back-and-forth motion while you walk behind it. Most self-propelled systems have several speeds to choose from, so you can operate the blower at a your preferred pace. When operating the blower on hilly terrain or during icy conditions, equip the blower's tires with chains to prevent slipping.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the tire chains flat on the ground with the smaller hooks to the inside.

    • 2

Swing the front auger up from the ground and maneuver the snow blower tires to the center of the chains. Set the auger onto the ground.

    • 3

Swing the links on the back section of the tire chain over the top and outside edges of the tires. Manipulate the center chains with your hand so that they are taut against the tire lugs.

    • 4

Grasp the other side of the chain links and pull it around the front of the tire. Manipulate the center chains over the tire lugs until the side links meet up at the top.

    • 5

Locate the small hook on the chain behind the tire and attach it to the opposite link to secure it into place. Grasp the larger lever lock, which is located on the outside of the chain, and slide it through the opposite link.

    • 6

Swing the lever lock back over to meet up with the chain link it is attached to and lock it into place. Repeat the process with the other tire.

    • 7

Hook up the tensioner if one is included with the tire chains. Space each hook evenly apart and attach them to the chain link to take up any slack in the tire chain.
