How to Install an Antique Hand-Operated Water Pump

A well in the yard that provides water for gardening or for outdoor animals is a convenient item. An antique hand-operated water pump looks attractive set up over a well. The pump requires manual labor to suction the water to the top. Once the water pump has been primed by pouring water inside, it can be operated by pumping the long arm on the back up and down at a quick pace to pull up the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pipe flange over the well casing. The well casing is the top of the existing well that sticks out of the cement or wooden cover. The flange will fit over the lip of the casing by pushing it down on the flange's rim.

    • 2

Attach the pump rod from the existing well to the pump rod in the hand-operated water pump with a 7/16-by-7/16 inch rod coupling. Use a 12-inch pipe wrench to tighten the coupling over each rod.

    • 3

Place the pump base -- the long cylinder -- over the pump rod. Attach the base to the well casing with the pin screws on the sides.

    • 4

Install the cap assembly -- the section with the pump arm -- over the pump base. Connect the rod eye, inside the assembly, to the pump rod with the screw included in the pump. Set the assembly so the arm is facing the direction most comfortable for you to pump.

    • 5

Attach the cap assembly to the base with the screws included in the water pump and a Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 6

Insert the pump handle into the pump arm with a cotter pin.

    • 7

Pump the arm to check the length of the pump rod. Adjust the rod by replacing it with a shorter rod if the pump handle does not move from the extreme highest point to the closed position properly.

    • 8

Pour a glass of water down the opening on the assembly to prime the pump.
