How to Replace a Belt on a White Lawnmower LT 950H

The White Outdoors LT950H lawn tractor was equipped with a 23-horsepower vertical shaft gasoline engine. The belt on the LT950H propels the mower blades, through a series of intricate pulleys. There are three blades on the 50-inch mowing deck. The White LT950H had a 46-inch wide wheel base, and was fitted with a disc brake system. Replacing the belt on the White LT650H will help increase the performance of the mower deck.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch-drive socket set
  • New belt -- White Part No. 954-04077

Instructions

      Lower the mower deck as low as it can be set, using the height adjuster lever on the mower. Remove the two belt guards from the left and right sides of the deck, using a ratchet and socket to remove the mounting screws.

      Loosen the idler bracket pivot bolt without removing it, using a ratchet and socket. Insert your 3/8-inch-drive ratchet square head into the provided square notch on the idler bracket. Set the ratchet direction to loosen. Rotate the bracket to the right side of the mower. Remove the belt upward and off of the pulley closest to you, by hand.

      Remove the belt from the rest of the mower pulleys by hand. Remove the belt from the bottom of the engine by hand. Turn the front wheels on the mower completely to the right if you are having any trouble accessing the bottom of the engine.

      Step to the right side of the mower. Turn the steering wheel so that the wheels are facing completely to the left. Install the new belt onto the engine pulley first. Pull the belt rearward and route the belt around the adjustable idler pulley. Route the belt around the front side of the center blade pulley, then around the rear side of the idler pulley. Route the belt around the far right blade pulley. Push the rest of the slack in the belt over toward the left side of the mower deck.

      Step to the left side of the mower and turn the steering wheel so that the wheels are turned completely right again. Pull the slack in the belt through to the left side blade pulley. Insert your ratchet's square head onto the idler bracket. Push the idler bracket toward the right side of the mower with your ratchet , while pulling the belt over and onto the far left blade pulley. Release the idler bracket slowly. Visually check the belt to make sure you are on each pulley correctly and centered. Make adjustments as needed.

      Tighten the pivot bolt snug with your ratchet and a socket. Install the right and left side belt guards onto the mower deck. Install the belt guard mounting screws. and tighten them snug with your ratchet and socket. Raise the rear of the mower deck upward and install the deck release rod handle for both sides of the mower deck. Raise the mower deck upward and downward with the mower deck height adjuster lever on the tractor, to make sure the deck is aligned and functions up and down properly.
