Poulan Chain Saw Carburetor Adjusting Tools

Adjusting the carburetor on a Poulan chain saw allows for maximum performance from the engine. The screws that regulate the amount of fuel-to-air mixture in the chain saw's carburetor can be adjusted to get the right ratio for operation. Perfecting this technique takes a little practice, but the results will pay off in the long run because the chain saw will perform its job better.
  1. Small Phillips Head Screwdriver

    • A small Phillips head screwdriver is essential to adjusting the carburetor. Most newer Poulan chain saw models use a Walboro carburetor equipped with these screws.

    Spline screwdriver

    • For other older Poulan models that use a Zama carburetor, you will need a spline screwdriver. These carburetor models use a spline screw. Check your operator's manual or remove the carburetor to determine which carburetor your chain saw has.

    Wrench

    • On many newer Poulan models, the factory installs a plastic tip over the carburetor screws. This is to prevent excess adjustment of the carburetor and damage to the engine. Consider the risk involved before using a wrench to remove the tips.

    Tachometer

    • A tachometer is essential to adjust the high-speed screw. Every Poulan engine has a maximum rpm. If you exceed this by over-tightening the high-speed screw, the cylinder will blow out, the piston will seize up and the engine will suffer irreparable damage. Using a tachometer will allow you to properly adjust the engine to avoid topping the maximum rpm. Follow the maximum speed listed in your operator's manual.
