Mitsubishi manufactured the engine for the Case IH 255. Running exclusively on diesel fuel, the engine caps its revolutions per minute at 2,700 and can generate up to 24 horsepower. The 255 operates on three cylinders, each with a bore of 2.99 inches and a stroke of 3.07 inches. Accordingly the total engine displacement is 64.75 cubic inches. Temperature is regulated by a liquid cooling system.
The standard transmission for the 255 is of the constant mesh variety, meaning countershaft and main shaft gears are never out of contact. International Harvester did offer a "syncromesh" option, which regulates the timing of the constant mesh in order to quickly shift gears without any clash or grinding. There are nine forward gears and three for reverse. It bears noting that each gear has three speeds respectively: high, medium and low.
The two-wheel drive version is shipped at 1,940 pounds, whereas the four-wheel drive weighs in at 2,095 pounds. The width of the former is 47 inches even; the latter, 46.8 inches. Irrespective of rendition, the 255 has a uniform length of 111.8 inches. While the vehicle stands tall at a steering wheel height of 54.9 inches, the ROPS increases the total height to 82.5 inches. ROPS is all the more necessary because this tractor clears the ground by almost 15 inches. In farming or turf care, the 255 has a turn radius of 9.19 feet. The tire type varies based on whether the use is agricultural or landscape-oriented.
The Case IH 255 has a three-point hitch that can accommodate all manner of attachments. It is compatible with tillers, plows and cultivators for farming. For landscape and turf care, this tractor works with power rakes, finishing mowers and pulverizing equipment. Finally, it can be used for construction in tandem with scrapers and auger bits.
