How to Replace a Pull String on a Walk Behind John Deere Snowblower

John Deere produces a line of snowblowers, one of which is the walk behind blower. Unlike the driveable snowblowers, this model is pushed by hand and started with a pull string. The string is attached to a pulley system and to the engine of the blower. Upon being pulled by the user, the engine will start and remain on, as long as the engine bar and handlebar are squeezed together by the user's hands.

After years of wear and tear, the string may have to be replaced. This is a fairly simple job that almost any do-it-yourself-er can accomplish in about an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Pull the spark plug wire by hand from the plug, until it releases.

    • 2

Remove the engine cover and shroud from the engine. Loosen and remove the screws that hold them in place. They are located on the top of the snowblower.

    • 3

Turn the shroud upside down and place it on a flat surface, such as a workbench. Hold it in place, by tightening it using wide-jaw clamps.

    • 4

Remove the starter string from the pulley, located in the center of the underside of the shroud. Untie the knot that holds the pull string in the pulley. Pull the pull string out from the pulley and the shroud.

    • 5

Insert the new pull string through the locations in the shroud and pulley, from which the old string was just removed.

    • 6

Tie a knot in the end of the string that was inserted through the shroud and pulley. Singe the end of the cord with the knot using a lighter.

    • 7

Release the shroud from the clamps, turn it upright and replace it over the engine. Insert and tighten the screws that hold the shroud in place using an adjustable wrench.

    • 8

Reinstall the engine cover, and secure it in place by inserting and tightening its screws with an adjustable wrench.

    • 9

Gently tug and release the pull string to recoil it into the snowblower.

    • 10

Plug the spark plug wire back into the spark plug. Push it in the plug by hand.
