Turn off the Poulan trimmer, set it on a flat surface such as a workbench or table and let it cool completely.
Insert a screwdriver into each screw in the fuel cover. (The fuel cover is on the rear of the trimmer.) Turn each screw counterclockwise to loosen it, and pull each one straight out. Pull the cover straight off the trimmer to reveal the carburetor choke plate.
Insert a screwdriver into the choke plate, turn the screw counterclockwise and pull it straight out. Pull the choke plate straight off to reveal the carburetor, and set it aside. (The choke plate is a metal flat plate on the carburetor top.)
Pull the throttle cable off the carburetor with needle-nose pliers. The throttle cable is a thin metal wire that attaches to the carburetor.
Unscrew each screw holding the carburetor mounting plate onto the trimmer body. Pull the carburetor out of the trimmer. Pull the fuel tank out of the trimmer.
Pry the fuel line retaining ring from the outside of the tank off with a screwdriver. Pull the fuel line off the primer bulb. Cut the old fuel line, and pull it out of the fuel tank. Use needle-nose pliers to get the additional internal fuel line and filter out of the fuel tank. Lay both pieces of fuel line on the workbench, and cut a new fuel line the same size.
Push the new fuel line into the fuel tank. Hold the fuel filter inside the tank with needle-nose pliers, and press the internal fuel line onto the filter. Push the line through the tank so the filter sits on the tank bottom. Hold the fuel line in this position with one hand. Feed the fuel line retaining ring onto the loose end of the fuel line, and press it into place on the fuel tank with needle-nose pliers. The filter will remain in position.
Push the free end of the fuel line onto the primer bulb as far as it will go.
Replace the carburetor into the mounting plate, aligning the screw holes. Replace the screws into the mounting plate. Replace the throttle cable on the carburetor. Replace the choke plate, and tighten the screws holding it on. Replace the fuel cover, and tighten the screws clockwise.
