Disconnect the power plug from the electrical outlet or extension cord. If your Weed Eater is gasoline powered, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
Flip the Weed Eater over, so that the cutting head is facing upward. Remove any grass or weeds that may be wrapped around the cutting head.
Hold the trimmer head firmly with one hand near the base, and push in and rotate on the knob in the center of the head counterclockwise until the knob stops turning. Lift the knob out of the head, pulling out the empty spool.
If your Weed Eater doesn't have a knob in the center, press on the tabs on either side of the head, and lift off the spool cap. Then remove the empty spool from inside the head.
Pull out any loose, short segments of line from the spool.
Insert the end of the new string from a replacement reel into the hole in the center of the spool. Wind the string around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrows on the side of the spool. Continue winding until the spool is full, and then cut the line with a pair of scissors and set the replacement reel aside.
Place the fully-loaded spool over the head and feed the end of the new line through the hole in the side of the head. Place the spool into the head. Push on the knob and rotate the spool clockwise into the locked position.
If your Weed Eater doesn't have a knob, after feeding the end of the line through the hole in the side of the head, place the spool into the head and snap the spool cover over the head.
Pull the string taut from outside the trimmer head and cut the string at the cutting bar with a pair of scissors.
Turn the Weed Eater back over, and reconnect the electrical plug to the extension cord or the spark plug wire to the spark plug. Start the trimmer and begin trimming.
