How to Adjust a Small Two-Cycle Engine Carburetor

2-Cycle engines are commonly found on small hand held power lawn tools, such as chain saws, weed trimmers, and leaf blowers. These engines use a mixture of gas and oil, which acts not only as the fuel but also circulates through the engine and acts as a lubricant. As the engine gets older it may need a carburetor adjustment to retain optimal performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull air cleaner cover off, located above the carburetor. Clean or replace air filter. Reinstall air filter and air filter cover.

    • 2

Adjust the carburetor. Under the air filter is the carburetor, on the side of the carburetor are two adjustment screws. Under each screw is a marking. One marked "L" for low or idle speed and "H" for the high speed. Screw both adjustment screws clockwise all the way in.

    • 3

Turn both adjustment screws out 1 and 1/2 turns.

    • 4

Start the engine. Readjust the "L" screw until the idle runs smoothly.

    • 5

Place engine throttle to the full throttle position. Adjust the "H" screw until the engine runs smoothly in the full throttle position.
