How to Rev a Two-Stroke Higher

Small lawn equipment, chain saws, leaf blowers and weed trimmers often have two-cycle, or two-stroke, engines. This type of engine uses a mixture of gas and oil, which serves not just as fuel but also as lubricant to keep the engine cool. These engines often run at extremely high revolutions per minute (rpm) -- about four times the rpm of a four-cycle engine. As the engine ages, the rpm can start to decline. Make some specific adjustments to increase your two-stroke engine's rpm.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the air cleaner cover located directly over the carburetor. Clean or replace the air filter. Reinstall the air filter and cover.

    • 2

Start the engine, and advance it to full throttle.

    • 3

Adjust the carburetor. On the side of the carburetor are two adjustment screws, one marked with a stamp directly below the screw with an "L" and the other marked with an "H." Only adjust the "H" screw.

    • 4

Turn the "H" screw counterclockwise with a small slotted screwdriver until the engine reaches your desired rpm.
