How do I Repair a Leaking Gas Leaf Blower?

A gas leak on a leaf blower is a critical problem that needs immediate attention. The fuel system on a 2-cycle engine uses a mixture of gas and oil. It not only fuels the engine but also lubricates the internal moving parts. When a leak occurs, following the leak from its origin to the engine is the best way to troubleshoot the system.

Things You'll Need

Place the leaf blower on stable ground. Remove the gas cap from the gas tank. Flip over the gas cap and check the gasket located inside. If cracked or defective, replace the gasket. Pull out the gasket with a small flathead screwdriver and press in the new gasket. If that was not the leak, move to the next step.

Remove the fuel line or lines, depending on the model. They connect to the side of the carburetor and lead into the gas tank, and will slide out. Check the ends for cracks and any pin holes throughout the line. If found, replace the fuel line by sliding the old line out of the tank and from the lead in the carburetor. Install the new line. If that was not the leak, move to the next step.

Locate the primer bulb on the carburetor and hold it down while you look for any cracks or leaks. If a leak is present, replace the primer bulb. Remove the four Phillips screws that encase the primer bulb. Remove casing and slide out the defective bulb. Slide a new bulb into the casing and reinstall the four screws. If the bulb was not leaking, move to the next step.

Check for a leak between the engine block and the carburetor. If a leak is present, the carburetor gasket needs replacement. Remove the carburetor by twisting off the nut holding on the air filter cover. Remove the cover and air filter. This will expose two screws that hold the carburetor against the engine block. Remove the screws. The gasket will peel off. Install a new gasket and reinstall carburetor, air filter and air filter cover. If the leak is still present, move to the next step.

Check over carburetor; if leaking, the carburetor is damaged and needs replacing. Remove the air filter cover and air filter. Remove the two screws holding the carburetor against the engine block with the Phillips screwdriver. Install the new carburetor, air filter and air filter cover.
