How to Connect a Tachometer to a 345 Chainsaw

A tachometer is used to read the rpm (revolutions per minute) of an engine. A tachometer helps ensure that your chainsaw is operating at peak performance; if the chainsaw's rpm is too high, it can cause serious damage to the engine. If the rpm is too low, it can cause the chainsaw to stall during operation. Connecting a tachometer to a Husqvarna 345 can be done easily and in only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the chainsaw flat on a work bench.

    • 2

Start the engine, and let it idle for three minutes. Remove the air filter cover located between the operator handle and the throttle trigger. This will expose the spark plug wire.

    • 3

Turn on the tachometer, and wrap the lead from the tachometer around the spark plug wire.

    • 4

Check the meter reading. At idle, the tachometer should read 2,700 rpm, plus or minus 100 rpm.

    • 5

Advance the throttle to the full-throttle position and take the tachometer reading. The proper operating range is 9,000 rpm, plus or minus 200 rpm.
