How to Rewind a Coil Spring on a Poulan Chainsaw

Repairing a starter recoil on a Poulan chainsaw can be done in just a few short minutes. However, if the recoil spring comes out of the housing, this quick task just became a huge undertaking. Trying to rewind the spring and hold it with your hands while reinstalling is virtually impossible. Avoid this problem by following a simple procedure to rewind the spring and reinstall it in short order.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the spring flat on a hard level surface.

    • 2

Tie the string around the spring, place the string through the middle of the spring, to the outside. The string will keep the spring stable and in place while rewinding.

    • 3

Start winding by hand. Once the spring becomes wound tightly, clamp down with the needle-nose vise grips.

    • 4

Untie the string from the spring. Place the spring into the recoil. Tip the spring into the casing, hold in place with one hand while pressing down and unhinge the vise grip with the other. Install the recoil housing.
