How to Use a Tachometer on a Weed Trimmer

A tachometer is used to measure the speed of an engine's rotation. The instrument is vital when carburetor adjustments are performed on a weed eater because the RPM, or rotations per minute, must be monitored continuously in order to adjust the carburetor to the correct setting. An incorrect adjustment can result in engine failure. Pocket tachometer sets include a Velcro band that is attached to the hand that will hold the weed eater.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the weed eater engine by using the starting instructions outlined in the manufacturer's user manual.

    • 2

Start the tachometer by pushing the ON button on the display pad.

    • 3

Remove the backing from the Velcro pad that came with the tachometer. Place the pad onto the back of the tachometer with the Velcro facing out. Press the Velcro pad firmly to adhere it to the back of the tachometer.

    • 4

Put the Velcro wrist bracelet on the arm holding the weed eater handle. Press the back of the tachometer onto the matching Velcro pad that is attached to the wrist bracelet. The tachometer must be held between four and 14 inches of the weed eater engine's spark plug in order to enable it to read the RPM of the engine.

Watch the tachometer display as the weed eater runs to monitor the engine RPM.
