Generators come in many different sizes, from small residential units to large commercial units. The wattage of the generator is always located on the model number of every manufacturer. A 2,000 watt generator will not put out that much energy through one plug outlet. To check each plug-in's output, check the amperage located on the plug itself and multiply the amperage by the volts. A normal household plug is 110 volts. If the plug is a 10 amp plug, the output is 1,100 watts.

1
Place the generator on a hard level surface.
-
2
Start the generator. Turn on the volt meter and set it to ohms 20k.
-
-
3
Place the positive lead from the meter into one of the plug receptacle prongs and place the negative lead into the other prong in the same plug receptacle.
-
4
Check the meter; it should read 110 volts plus or minus 10 volts. This means the proper voltage is coming out of that plug. Repeat Step 3 for any other plug receptacles found on the generator.
