How to Install a Stihl Chain Saw Automatic Oiler

Along with leaf blowers and lawn trimmers, Stihl also manufactures a wide variety of heavy-duty chain saws. Stihl chain saws are gas-powered with two-cycle engines. Regular maintenance on your Stihl chain saw includes sharpening the chain blade and changing out the bar from time to time. The oiler on your Stihl may need to be changed occasionally as well. The oiler is responsible for pumping oil through your bar mechanism. This keeps the chain and bar lubricated so that your saw can continue cutting efficiently.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the spark plug wire off your Stihl's spark plug with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Loosen and remove the three fastening bolts that hold your Stihl chain saw's bar in place. Remove these with a wrench by turning them to the left. Use your screwdriver to take off the tensioner screws. Slide the chain blade off the bar, then remove the bar.

    • 2

Take off the oil fill cap on your chain saw and drain all of the oil into a drip pan.

    • 3

Detach the screw holding the clutch assembly C-clamp in place. Remove the C-clamp and slip off the sprocket and needle cage. Fasten the clutch removal tool to your chain saw's clutch and turn it to the right to remove it. The threads on your clutch are left-handed, which means they are tightened by turning them to the left and loosened by turning them to the right.

Loosen and take out the two oiler pump fastening screws and remove the oiler. Insert the new oiler and secure it by tightening the fastening screws.

    • 5

Slip your clutch back in place and tighten it with the clutch removal tool. Slide the needle cage and the sprocket back into place. Reinsert the C-clamp and tighten its screw to hold the clutch assembly in place.

    • 6

Insert the end of your Stihl bar into the handle. Reinsert the tensioner screws and tighten them with a screwdriver. Reattach the chain blade and reinstall the three fastening bolts with the socket set.

Refill your Stihl with oil. Reattach the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
