How to Adjust the Carb on a Craftsman Hedge Trimmer

Craftsman gasoline-powered hedge trimmers are convenient for the homeowner with large hedges. One way to keep the hedge trimmer running at optimal performance is to adjust the carburetor periodically. The engine should idle and stay running without the hedge trimmer blades moving. Adjusting the carburetor on a Craftsman hedge trimmer usually involves only the idle adjustment. An authorized service shop should do most fine tuning to the high and low speed needles.Idle adjustments to the carburetor often resolve normal engine performance issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Craftsman hedge trimmer on level ground. Locate the idle adjustment screw near the carburetor. Some Craftsman hedge trimmers have three adjustment screws. The idle screw is the one with a "T" letter stamp.

    • 2

Start the hedge trimmer and allow the engine to warm up for five minutes.

    • 3

Turn the idle adjustment screw clockwise with a flat-head screwdriver to increase the idle speed. This is necessary if the engine continually stalls. Turn the screw in small 1/8 turn increments.

    • 4

Rotate the idle screw counterclockwise until the blades no longer move when the engine is at idle. Once the blades stop moving, stop turning the adjustment screw.

    • 5

Squeeze the throttle trigger once and release it to ensure the trimmer goes back to idle speed.
