Troubleshooting a Ryobi 700r Trimmer that Won't Start

Ryobi's 700r trimmer allows you to trim a yard in tight spaces where a mower can't reach. These gas trimmers allow more freedom than electric trimmers because they don't have a cord that must be dragged around. The Ryobi 700r has a small combustible engine to power the rotating head that uses line for trimming grass and weeds. The trimmer may require some troubleshooting steps when the engine fails to start.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set the trimmer's ignition switch to the "On" position if the switch is in the "Off" position.

    • 2

Check the fuel tank to make sure it has fuel. Add fuel if necessary.

    • 3

Press the fuel primer bulb five to seven times before starting the trimmer's engine. The primer bulb is a dome-shaped plastic bulb near the trimmer's choke lever.

    • 4

Inspect the spark plug for cracks and replace it if necessary. Pull the spark plug wire off with your fingers. Loosen the spark plug with a socket wrench by turning it counterclockwise.

    • 5

Drain the fuel tank if the fuel is old. Place a drain pan under the trimmer. Open the fuel cap and tilt the trimmer to dump old fuel into a drain pan. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel.
