Attachment Types for a Skid Steer

Auger

• An auger features a long, rotating shaft and circular discs that jut out all along the shaft. You can use this tool for creating horizontal grooves in your soil, which you can use for planting, or roll it along the ground, aerating your soil to get it ready for planting. You can also use this attachment vertically to break into soil, creating holes in your ground for post holes or for plants.

Mower

• The skid steel mower attachment cuts down thick grasses, bushes and even small trees. Generally, these mower attachments sit flush to the ground, and small blades line the bottom of the attachment. The mower usually has a front grate to protect you from flying debris. The wider the deck is, the larger the cutting area is. If you are mowing a large, open landscape, rent or buy a mower with a large cutting capacity, at least 10 to 20 inches wide. Use this attachment for cutting down brush around trees or for clearing fields.

Backhoe

• A backhoe is a multipurpose attachment that you can use for digging holes or for moving material. A backhoe is a type of bucket attachment with a sharp edge, and these attachments are usually mounted to the front of your skid steer. If you attach the bucket facing downward, you can use the bucket to dig into soils or materials and scoop out these materials. This helps you create trenches and holes or simply clear away debris. If you mount the bucket facing upward, then you can slide it under materials. You can then move any of these materials to or from your worksite.

Bale Spear

• If you work on a farm or simply need to move a lot of hay, then the bale spear attachment is quite useful. This attachment is actually two rods with sharp points, and you use these points to penetrate the hay. You can then easily lift the hay and stack it, or you can place it out in the fields for your animals.
