How to Troubleshoot a Poulan Weed Trimmer

Poulan trimmers, just like any machine, may eventually stop working for one reason or another. There are a few different reasons why your Poulan trimmer has stopped working properly. Determining the problem is the first step in fixing it. Each problem has a specific cause and repair. If your trimmer still does not work after troubleshooting it, you will need to either take it to a repair shop or purchase a new trimmer.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the start cord. If the engine does not start the trimmer could be out of gas, have a flooded engine or need a new spark plug. To clear a flooded engine, place the choke lever into the "Run" position and pull the start cord. If the gas tank is empty, fill it with new gas. Replace the spark plug if neither of the other options is the problem.

Listen to how the engine sounds while idling. If the engine sounds like it is running too fast, adjust the carburetor. If this does not solve the problem, your trimmer will need to be taken to a repair shop.

    • 3

Check the air filter if your trimmer starts but either runs slow or dies mid-use. If the air filter looks dirty, replace it. If you put a new filter in but the trimmer continues to have problems, it will need to be taken to a repair shop.

Mix the fuel correctly in order to prevent your engine from smoking. If you notice smoke, empty the fuel tank and replace with the correct mixture. The gas should be mixed with engine oil. Check your owner's manual for the exact measurements required.

Place your hand near the engine to make sure it does not feel overheated. If your engine is overheated, the fuel mixture could be wrong, the spark plug may be dirty or the carburetor may need to be adjusted.
