How to Winterize a Gas Powered Pressure Washer

Homeowners and others use gas powered pressure washers to clean hard surfaces. The machines increase the pressure of the water, and optionally add soap, to create a stream of water that knocks dirt or other materials loose. Gas powered pressure washers stored in cold winter conditions need to be winterized to prevent damage from freezing.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive antifreeze
  • 1/2-gallon containers, 2
  • Gas stabilizer

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the water supply and the high pressure hose from the pressure washer. Drain these hoses by laying one end on the ground and rolling the hose up from the other end. Allow the water to drain as you roll up the hoses.

    • 2

Mix 1/2-gallon of automobile antifreeze and 1/2-gallon of water. Separate the mixture into two 1/2-gallon containers.

    • 3

With the machine running pour the mixture from one container into the water input opening of the pressure washer.

    • 4

While the machine is continuing to run insert the detergent input hose into the other container of antifreeze mix.

    • 5

Run the gas powered pressure washer until it emits the antifreeze mix from the high pressure output.

    • 6

Add gas stabilizer to the gas tank according to manufacturer's instructions. Add enough gas to fill the tank.

    • 7

Store the gas powered pressure washer in a dry location for the winter. Hang the hoses from round hose racks to prevent kinks or stress points in the hoses.
