How to Avoid Snowblower Clogs

Snowblowers are handy pieces of equipment to own for homeowners who live in colder climates. The snowblower is like a lawn mower for snow. The auger cuts through the snow and expels it through a side chute. Heavy snow and working too fast causes clogs in the snowblower. Often these clogs result in worn shear pins because the auger is working too hard. Avoid snowblower clogs using proper operation techniques and avoid the costs of replacing shear pins every time you blow snow.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any obstructions such as door mats, toys and sleds out of the pathway of the snowblower.

    • 2

Start the snowblower within an area outside of the area with the lowest amount of snow. Allow the engine to warm for five minutes before engaging the auger.

    • 3

Engage the auger and move forward at a slow, steady pace. Do not force the snowblower through the snow. Allow the auger to propel the snowblower forward to dictate the pace.

    • 4

Release the auger handle and pull the snowblower back if the unit starts to vibrate abnormally. This is usually a sign that the auger is beginning to clog. Engage the auger once it is out of the snow pack so it can discharge the snow through the chute.

    • 5

Avoid going through heavy slush. Slush is heavier than snow and causes undue stress on the auger.
