How to Change a Spark Plug on a Toro Snow Thrower

Your Toro snow thrower is a convenient piece of equipment for removing snow around your home during the winter months. Just like any other piece of yard equipment, proper maintenance helps to keep the snow thrower running at top efficiency. When the engine begins to run sluggish or is difficult to start, it might be time to change the spark plug. Changing a spark plug on a Toro snow thrower is the same as changing one on your mower. Replacement spark plugs are available at auto parts stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Toro snow thrower and allow the engine to cool completely, if you have been using the snow thrower.

    • 2

Grasp the spark plug wire where it connects to the top of the plug with your fingers. Twist the spark plug wire and pull it straight off the spark plug.

    • 3

Clean the area around the spark plug with a rag. This helps prevent dirt and debris from falling into the combustion chamber while there is no plug in the hole.

    • 4

Turn the spark plug counterclockwise with a socket wrench. There is a hex fitting on the spark plug for a socket to fit over. Remove the old spark plug and cover the hole with a clean rag.

    • 5

Set the gap on the new spark plug to 0.030 with your gap tool. A gap tool is a small disc with an edge that graduates in thickness and has markings to show gap size. The tool should slide snugly between the bent metal ground electrode and the bottom of the insulator. Adjust the ground electrode up or down with the hook on the gap tool as necessary.

Remove the rag from the spark plug hole in the engine. Thread the new spark plug into the hole until it is hand tight. Tighten the spark plug completely with the socket wrench. Push the spark plug wire over the top of the spark plug until it snaps into place.
