How to Change a Starter String on a Ryobi

No matter what type of weed trimmer you own, it seems like you must tug on the pull-start rope many times before your trimmer roars to life. The Ryobi trimmer uses the same recoil starter as most gas trimmers use. A metal coil connects to a pulley, and when you pull on the rope the coil tightens. When you let go of the rope, the coil forces the rope around the pulley. If the rope starts to fray, you must replace it with a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws that secure the plastic shroud over the Ryobi's recoil assembly. The recoil assembly is the assembly that the pull rope connects to. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws.

    • 2

Turn the pulley that the rope attaches to in order to unravel the rope. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the locking tab that holds the rope onto the pulley. Apply pressure to the pulley and allow it to slowly recoil to the closed position.

    • 3

Remove the rope from the eyelet on the shroud. If you plan to reuse the T-handle, pry a flat-head screwdriver into the center of the handle and pull out the metal insert that holds the rope inside the handle. Pull the rope out through the top of the handle. Run the new rope through the top of the handle and press the insert into the plastic on the top of the handle. Thread the rope through the shroud.

    • 4

Turn the pulley with your hands so it rests in the unraveled position.

    • 5

Place the tip of the rope into the locking tab and then close the locking tab with your fingers. Apply pressure to the pulley and allow it to recoil into the closed position. As it closes, place the shroud over the motor.

    • 6

Secure the shroud to the motor with the screws.
