How to Hang a DIY Drip Irrigation Bag

Drip irrigation bags can provide a steady supply of water to your garden for precise moisture control. Dripping water more accurately mimics natural water sources for certain temperate plants where slow, steady rainfall is more common than intense showers. Drip irrigation bags also save you time, as you just need to refill the bag rather than tending to a watering can for several minutes each morning. When hanging a do-it-yourself drip irrigation bag, you need to consider drip height and rate of flow.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a swivel hook to the top of your bag using zip-ties. If you made your DIY drip bag out of waterproof polyurethane laminated fabric, you could also sew a thick piece of cloth to the top and use this to tie on the hook.

    • 2

Twist a screw hook into a surface no more than 4 feet off the ground over your garden. If you don't have any suitable surfaces, consider installing a hanging plant pole in your garden. These poles contain a pointed end that you can drive into the soil with a hooked top designed for hanging plants. As drips of water fall from the bag, they naturally gain speed from gravity. If hung higher than 4 feet, the fast-moving drop can disturb the soil and cause watery divots on your garden. The closer the bag is to the soil, the better.

    • 3

Hang the DIY drip irrigation bag from the screw hook or pole using the swivel hook.

    • 4

Place a bucket underneath the DIY drip irrigation bag. It's important to measure the flow of your DIY drip irrigation bag before you start using it.

    • 5

Pour the collected drippings into a liquid measuring cup after 24 hours. The liquid should be roughly the same amount that you use in your daily watering can. If there is too much water, you'll need to make a new DIY drip bag. If there is too little water, poke additional pinholes in the bottom of the bag to increase flow.
