Troubleshooting Two Cycle Weed Trimmers

Weed trimmers have either a two-cycle or four-cycle engine. This refers to the number of times the piston moves when starting the engine. In a two-cycle weed trimmer there are two strokes -- the compression stroke and the return stroke, which sends fuel into the cylinder. Two-cycle engines are cheaper than four-cycle, however they normally will not last as long. Two-cycle engines do not use fuel as efficiently, though they are more powerful than four-cycle engines. If your two-cycle weed trimmer starts malfunctioning, there are a few things you can try before purchasing a new weed trimmer.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the start handle. If the weed trimmer will not start, open the gas cap and make sure there is gas/oil mixture in the tank. Fill empty tanks with a mixture of a two-cycle synthetic oil and gasoline. Follow the manufacturer's directions for proper ratio of the mixture.

Start a flooded engine by turning the choke lever off. The choke lever is on the top of the weed trimmer near the pull handle. Pull the start handle a few times to clean the fuel out of the engine.

    • 3

Remove the spark plug wire and pull out the spark plug. Replace the old spark plug with a new one once per year. Clean dirty spark plugs with a wire brush. Old or dirty spark plugs will cause the weed trimmer to not start.

Change the air filter when your weed trimmer becomes less powerful. Remove the screws on the side of the weed trimmer's engine. Pull off the cover. The air filter is located directly behind the cover.

Take the weed trimmer to a service center if the engine sounds different than it should while idling. The carburetor needs adjustment. This is a complicated task and should be handled by a professional.

Check the position of the choke lever if the engine starts smoking. This often happens if the choke is partially on. This can also happen if the fuel mixture is incorrect or if the air filter is dirty.
