Can You Use a Drip Irrigation System for a Lawn Area?

Drip irrigation is a low-pressure irrigation system where water is slowly dripped out of the irrigation tubes and into the soil surrounding plants. It is an efficient irrigation system, up to 40 percent more efficient than sprinkler irrigation.
  1. The Problem

    • Because drip systems operate under low pressure, the water from each dripper does not travel far. It would take a large system to adequately water a lawn, which has plants covering every square inch.

    Setup

    • Lawn drip irrigation is not so difficult in practice. Bury a pair of solid pipes on either side of your yard to act as manifolds and store the water. Running flexible drip lines from one to the other underground spaced 1 foot apart provides enough water for your lawn.

    Benefits

    • Because drip irrigation uses flexible tubing, it is especially well suited to providing irrigation to lawns with unusual shapes. In some jurisdictions, drip irrigation allows homeowners to be exempted from lawn watering restrictions during drought.
