DIY Radiator in Van

Vans have many different configurations for radiators, depending on the year, make and model, but all are similar in that the radiator is located just behind the grill, and it is accessible through the hood. If the radiator leaks or is clogged and cannot be unclogged, you must change it or else the van will overheat. Most vans use radiators with aluminum cores and plastic tanks. It is common to find a leak between the core and the tank.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the drain pan under the radiator petcock. Open the petcock and allow the coolant to drain. Discard the coolant in an appropriate manner. Loosen the clamp on the air duct, using the screwdriver. Pull the duct off the air cleaner assembly. Remove the air cleaner assembly, using the appropriate socket.

    • 2

Pull the plastic rivet retainers holding the air deflector out, using the dykes. Remove the air deflector. Loosen the clamp on the upper radiator hose at the radiator, using the screwdriver. Pull the hose off the radiator and prop it out of the way. Loosen the clamp on the overflow hose at the radiator, then pull the overflow hose off the radiator and set it aside.

    • 3

Remove the fan and fan clutch from the water pump pulley, using the appropriate wrench. On some vans, the threads on the nut might be left-handed, in which case turn the nut clockwise instead of counterclockwise to remove it.

    • 4

Unbolt the fan shroud, using the appropriate socket. Lift the fan shroud, fan and fan clutch out of the vehicle as an assembly. Raise the vehicle, using the floor jack, then support it with jack stands.

    • 5

Remove the splash shield, using the appropriate socket. Slide an empty drain pan under the transmission cooler lines, if the radiator has a built-in cooler. Remove the transmission cooler lines, using the appropriate line wrench. Prop them up against the body to reduce fluid loss. Loosen the clamp on the lower radiator hose, using the screwdriver, then pull the hose off the radiator. Lower the vehicle, using the floor jack.

    • 6

Remove the bolts holding the support brackets onto the radiator support. Lift the support brackets out of the engine compartment. Lift the radiator out of the vehicle.

    • 7

Slide the new radiator into the engine compartment. Reinstall the support brackets. Jack up the vehicle and support it with jack stands. Reattach the transmission cooler lines and lower radiator hose. Reinstall the splash shield.

    • 8

Reinstall the fan, fan clutch and shroud as an assembly and tighten the bolts firmly. Reattach the air deflector, using new plastic retainers. Lower the vehicle off the jack stands, using the floor jack. Fill the radiator with coolant.
