Turn the Toro grass trimmer upside down and look underneath the shield. Make sure no grass or dirt clogs the line. If so, clean the head and try the trimmer again.
Remove the cover on the motor housing. Inspect the engine. If it looks burned out, you will need to purchase a new Toro grass trimmer.
Use your hand to spin the motor. Listen for any scraping noises and watch for binding. If you notice either of those things, locate the engine drum. If it looks cracked or worn you will need to replace the drum. If the drum appears fine but the engine still will not start, you will need to replace the Toro trimmer.
Check the motor brushes and motor brush springs. If the brushes appear worn the Toro trimmer will need to be replaced. Tighten up the springs if they appear loose.
Tighten the motor harness connections if they appear loose. Test both the lower and upper harness. If either is not working the way it should, it will need to be replaced.
Turn the Toro trimmer upside down and remove the spool cap. Look inside for any trapped dirt or grass. If you see any, remove it.
Pull on the ends of the thread to make sure it is tight around the spool. If the thread is loose, remove it from the spool and rewind it.
Check the driver teeth to see if they are worn. Replace the driver if necessary. If the teeth look okay, check the core. If the core is dirty or damaged, it will need to be replaced.
